Volney Sewall Fullam Papers, 1822-1912 (bulk:1861-1862).

E Volney Sewall Fullam Papers, 1822-1912, document the operation of two companies of the Vermont Volunteers during a portion of the Civil War, 1861-62. As Captain of Co. I, 2nd Regiment of the Vermont Volunteers, Fullam kept muster rolls, pay vouchers, receipts and invoices, as well as records of equipment issued to each enlistee. Fullam was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the 7th Regiment in 1862. After the Battle of Baton Rouge (August 5, 1862), Fullam was charged with misconduct. The papers contain documents and letters related to this affair and Fullam's subsequent resignation. The collection includes a few miscellaneous papers related to Volney's father, Sewall Fullam (1799-1876) of Ludlow. These items include a character reference, justice of the peace commission, admission to the practice of law, tax return, and law license.

Volney Sewall Fullam was born in Ludlow, Vermont, July 16, 1830, son of Eunice Howe Goddard and Sewall Fullam. He died in Boston on November 12, 1912. In May 1861 Fullam was commissioned as a Captain in Co. I of the Second Regiment of Vermont Volunteers and saw action at Bull Run, July 21, 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the 7th Regiment in January 1862, and resigned in August 1862 following the Battle of Baton Rouge and charges of misconduct. After the Civil War Voln...
